MediaTek Announces Octa-Core Dimensity 820 5G Chipset for Upper Mid-range Smartphones

MediaTek just announced a new Dimensity chipset, named Dimensity 820 with 5G support. It is an octa-core processor made for upper mid-range smartphones.

This chipset sits in between the flagship Dimensity 1000 series and the gaming-focused Helio G90 series. You may call this as a successor of Dimensity 800. But it has several improvements over the Dimensity 800 SoC and brings faster CPU and GPU performance.

MediaTek Dimensity 820 Soc overview

The Dimensity 820 is built on TSMC’s 7nm FinFET‌ process. It uses the same CPU microarchitecture as the other SoC made with this process. It is equipped with eight ARM cores.

It has an integrated ARM Mali G57 GPU for handling high-end graphics and modern-day games. This GPU has a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz and a maximum display resolution of 2,520×1,080 pixels.

The chipset comes with MediaTek HyperEngine 2.0 that provides best-in-class gaming experiences. According to the company, it can provide up to 33 percent more gaming performance than the nearest competitors. The HyperEngine also brings picture quality enhancements, networking optimizations, and rapid responsiveness.

MediaTek’s Imagiq 5.0 technology capable of handling four concurrent cameras and up to 80-megapixel sensors. The chip can also capture automatic frames at different exposures and combine them into a single video stream for enhanced video output. The Imagiq 5.0 also brings multi-frame 4K HDR‌ video recording, real-time video bokeh, Action Camera-grade Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), and improved noise reduction.

With MediaTek’s MiraVision Video technology, this processor gets AI-PQ, enhanced HDR10+ video playback, blue light filter, brightness dimmer, and HDR Composer (SDR to HDR). It also converts standard 24/30fps content to 60 or 120fps on supported displays.

MediaTek Dimensity 820 chipset also supports up to 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM. As per the official listing, this chipset features four Cortex-A76 cores clocked at up to 2.6GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at up to 2GHz.

Like other chipsets in Dimensity line-up, this new one also has integrated 5G modem with support for both Standalone (SA) and Non-standalone (NSA) Sub-6GHz networks.

It comes with 5G Carrier Aggregation, dual SIM standby that allows for seamless handover between two 5G connection areas. The company said it has been specially designed for global 5G network standards in North America, Asia, and Europe. It also supports two 5G SIMs with its Voice over New Radio (VoNR) services.

It has also support for UFS storage, Bluetooth v5.1, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, FM radio, and 4K (3,840×2,160 pixels) video recording.

Xiaomi also announced that the Redmi 10X will be one of the first phones to come with the MediaTek Dimensity 820 SoC.
